{"id":3053,"date":"2025-08-27T10:40:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T08:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/law-at-work.co.za\/?p=3053"},"modified":"2025-08-27T10:40:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T08:40:09","slug":"employee-screening-a-lifeline-for-employers-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law-at-work.co.za\/index.php\/2025\/08\/27\/employee-screening-a-lifeline-for-employers-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Employee Screening, A Lifeline for Employers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"988\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/law-at-work.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/law-at-work.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1.png 988w, https:\/\/law-at-work.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1-300x105.png 300w, https:\/\/law-at-work.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1-768x268.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 988px) 100vw, 988px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employee screening is the process of verifying a potential candidate\u2019s work history, education, professional qualifications and any criminal records they might have.&nbsp; It is good practice to do these before finalising an employment offer or signing a contract, ensuring the candidate meets the company&#8217;s standards and requirements.&nbsp; The purpose of the checks should be clearly communicated, and Employers are required to obtain written consent of the candidate before conducting these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employers may well be blind-sided by \u201cprestigious\u201d employers being listed in a candidate\u2019s employment history or references.&nbsp; However, these references should be verified, as they can be fraudulent.&nbsp; Without verifying the information received, this exposes the company to risks, including reputational damage.&nbsp; An interview alone is not sufficient to assess a candidate fully.&nbsp; Falsified references signal a lack of integrity which should raise concerns for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The common types of employee checks include but not limited to the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Credit checks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Criminal record<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ID verification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Company credit check<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social media and internet exposure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South African Fraud Prevention Services (SAFPS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Court cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Directorship search (CIPC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Person contacts trace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photo-enhanced ID verification and contact trace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust Information search, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marital status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employee screening provides the employer with the information necessary to pre-emptively discover the risk, or lack thereof, of a candidate.&nbsp; Not only does employee screening ensure you find the right candidate, but it also provides long-term financial savings, this is due to the decrease in needing to hire and fire people until you find the correct person for the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When conducting a CV reference check, it is important to verify that the listed companies are legitimate and that the email addresses provided for references are valid and associated with those companies.&nbsp; For instance, a candidate will state that they worked for XYZ company and provide a reference from their boss at XYZ company but the email address of the person writing the reference is something like <a href=\"mailto:boss@ZYXcompany.com\">boss@ZYXcompany.com<\/a>.
